Three Pitfalls to Avoid on the Road to a Connected World
If there is one thing we’ve learned as home integrators over the past 30 years, it’s that technology keeps changing and will continue to do so whether we like it or not . We want to be more than a firm that installs and maintains your entertainment or automation system, we want to be proactive in suggesting solutions that will keep you connected to the technologies that enhance your life.
With that in mind we’d like to make you aware of the three most common issues we see arising from technology or service changes to your system, and suggest ways to keep you & your family connected to our connected world. Here’s three things to keep an eye out for :
Changing TV and internet providers - If you have a system that we installed for you, be aware that changing service providers ( from FIOS to Comcast or vice versa ) usually requires coordination with us so that your systems continue to operate correctly. It’s not a big deal, but a heads up to us to schedule a visit to accompany the service changeover will allow us to reconfigure & reprogram your system to provide smooth, reliable operation going forward.
Wireless Printers - As wifi networks continue to evolve and improve, one critical issue keeps rearing its ugly head … wireless printers. Out of date, older wireless printers can &will slow your wifi speeds to a crawl. If you are paying for faster internet speeds ( 100 mbps or higher … pretty darned fast ), your older network printer will promptly drag every device on your network down to a speed of 11mbps … 10 % of the speed you are paying for … that is not a misprint.
Another issue is that wireless security standards continue to change. The newer, secure, wireless standard in place today is not able to talk to the older printers that were built before the new standard was released. If the old printer cannot talk the newer security standard, it will NOT connect to the network.
These are the reasons why keeping that old printer just doesn’t make sense. You should replace it with a new wireless printer ( for as little as $ 100 ) that has the latest wireless card and security standards built in … or better yet … hard wire the printer to the network so all of this becomes a non-issue.
Verizon Quantum - Recently Verizon Fios began offering a service called Quantum – it is an upgraded Fios service for cable TV. If you have a network or Sonos music system or any other device that utilizes your network ( like Pandora or Netflix ), making the change to Quantum without a corresponding visit from us may leave you without the full use of some or all of these services.
We have field tested a variety of configurations and have arrived at a solution that willretain the functionality you want along with the new features that Verizon provides. Call us & we’ll coordinate a visit along with the Quantum upgrade, to ensure you do not lose access to the streaming services you rely on. A little up front planning will save you a lot of headaches.
I hope this information is helpful to you, and thank you once again for choosing our firm to help you with your home technology needs .
